Medicare is a federal health insurance program for people 65 or older, certain younger individuals with disabilities, and those with End-Stage Renal Disease. Eligibility depends on age or qualifying conditions, and it’s important to understand the different parts of Medicare to choose the right coverage for your needs.
Medicare enrollment starts three months before your 65th birthday and continues for three months after. If you miss this period, you can enroll during the General Enrollment Period (Jan 1–Mar 31) or a Special Enrollment Period if eligible due to qualifying life events.
Medicare and VA benefits don’t coordinate, so you’ll need to use VA facilities for VA coverage and Medicare providers for Medicare benefits. If you have TRICARE For Life, Medicare acts as your primary insurance, and TRICARE covers costs Medicare doesn’t, including prescription drugs.
If you have employer coverage at 65, Medicare may be secondary if your employer has 20+ employees. You can delay Part B without penalty if your job-based insurance is credible. If your employer has fewer than 20 employees, Medicare is usually primary, and enrollment is recommended.
If you miss your Initial Enrollment Period, you may face late enrollment penalties for Part B or Part D. These penalties can increase your monthly premiums permanently. However, you may qualify for a Special Enrollment Period to sign up without penalties under certain circumstances.
Choosing the right plan depends on your health needs, financial situation, and preferences. Consider factors like prescription drug requirements, provider networks, and additional benefits. Our experts guide you through the options to find the plan that best fits your unique situation and budget.
Medicare Advantage (Part C) is an alternative to Original Medicare, combining hospital (Part A) and medical (Part B) coverage, often with prescription drug coverage (Part D) and extra benefits like dental and vision. Offered by private insurers, these plans provide comprehensive care within a network of providers.
Medigap, or a Medicare Supplement plan, helps cover out-of-pocket costs like deductibles, copayments, and coinsurance that Original Medicare doesn’t pay. These plans offer predictable healthcare expenses and allow you to see any doctor nationwide who accepts Medicare, giving you flexibility and financial peace of mind.
Original Medicare doesn’t include prescription drug coverage, but you can purchase a stand-alone Part D plan or choose a Medicare Advantage plan that includes prescription benefits. These plans help manage medication costs and ensure you have access to necessary prescriptions.
Yes, you can change plans during the Annual Enrollment Period (Oct 15–Dec 7) or a Special Enrollment Period triggered by qualifying life events. Review your coverage each year to ensure your plan meets your current health and financial needs.
